Though it may be the shortest month of the year, February was a true adventure for the children. Between yoga, exploring emotions, discovering the polar regions, and creative workshops, each day brought opportunities to learn, create, and be amazed.
These seemingly simple activities actually nurture the development of executive functions — the brain’s “superpowers” that prepare children to succeed both in school and in life.
A month rich in discoveries and emotions.
🧘♀️ Mondays: Yoga and Mandalas — A Winning Duo for Focus
Every Monday, the children enjoyed a yoga session — a peaceful moment to slow down and reconnect with themselves. After this inner journey, they expressed their creativity by creating mandalas using small treasures from nature.
While playful on the surface, these activities are powerful tools for developing executive functions:
- Working memory (remembering yoga poses and the elements of a mandala).
- Inhibitory control (staying focused and resisting distractions).
- Cognitive flexibility (shifting from physical activity to artistic creation).
Why does this matter? These skills are essential for learning to read, write, solve problems, and interact with others. By nurturing them from preschool onward, we help children grow in independence and confidence.
🧠 Tuesdays: Exploring Emotions — A Step Toward Social Intelligence
On Tuesdays, we continued our deep dive into the world of emotions: joy, anger, sadness, surprise… Through role-play, storytelling, and group discussions, the children learned to recognize, name, and express what they feel. These workshops support:
- Inhibitory control (waiting for one’s turn to speak, listening to others).
- Emotional regulation (understanding and managing reactions).
- Empathy (recognizing others’ feelings).
A tip for home: You can use emotion cards or books like The Color Monster to talk about feelings with your child. These conversations strengthen communication and cooperation — essential life skills.
🦭 Discovering the Poles: A Scientific and Artistic Journey
Just before the holidays, the children explored the mysteries of the North and South Poles. Through images of sea ice, icebergs, and polar animals, they :
- Compared the two poles (Which animals live there? Why is it so cold?).
- Created unique snowflakes by drawing intricate patterns.
- Painted with ice cubes — a sensory activity that stimulates creativity and fine motor skills.
These workshops beautifully combined science, art, and movement while nurturing curiosity and observation — two pillars of executive functioning.
🎭 Back to School: Carnival, Cooking, and a Journey to Canada
After two weeks of rest, the children returned for a joyful and delicious week:
- Carnival: costumes, a parade, and shared laughter.
- Cooking workshop: making coconut macaroons — an activity requiring precision, patience, and cooperation.
- An imaginary trip to Canada: discovering cold-climate animals, with a special focus on whales. A heartfelt thank you to Liam and his mother for these wonderful sensory activities that helped bring our theme to a close !
These shared moments strengthen memory, planning skills, and mental flexibility — essential tools for growing with confidence.
🦸 Executive Functions: The Brain’s Superpowers
Executive functions are a set of mental processes that allow your child to :
- Focus (ignoring distractions).
- Plan (organizing actions to achieve a goal).
- Regulate emotions (staying calm when facing challenges).
- Adapt (changing strategies when needed).
How can we support them daily ?
- Limit screen time: Too much exposure, especially to fast-moving images, can tire working memory and reduce attention span.
- Encourage free play: Outdoors, in nature whenever possible, or with simple toys (blocks, modeling clay, etc.).
- Promote hands-on activities: Drawing, cooking, building… These moments develop fine motor skills and patience.
Why is this so important? Well-developed executive functions help children learn more effectively, build positive relationships, and face everyday challenges with resilience.
We are delighted to share this journey of growth with you and your children. Every activity, every game, every discovery is a seed planted for their future. Together, let us nurture their curiosity, their joy of learning, and their inner balance.
