Introduction to "Montessori Education 3 - 6 years"
We will cover the essential theoretical foundations that enable the creation of a Montessori environment and the adoption of the appropriate approach with children, followed by how to present the practical, sensorial, language and math activities designed for the 3-6 year curriculum.
Features of the training
General objective of the training
By the end of the training, participants will be equipped to apply the key developmental tools of the Montessori method for children between 3 and 6 years old in contexts such as preschool classrooms, early stimulation workshops, or individualized support, especially for children with disabilities.
Pedagogical objectives
- To understand the needs of 3 to 6-year-olds in relation to overall child development.
- To cultivate an approach that enables the child’s self-directed activity.
- To understand the developmental flow and the mechanics of the teaching aids in practical life, sensorial exploration, language and math.
- To determine which materials to present depending on the children’s individual needs.
- To introduce the materials effectively.
Intended audience and prerequisites
Intended audience: Teachers in Cycle 1 (early years/preschool) or those planning to teach Cycle 1 in public or private education, ATSEMs (School Assistants for Nursery Schools), individuals offering academic support in workshops or at home, speech therapists, LSAs (Learning Support Assistants), registered childminders, early childhood professionals, parents.
Prerequisites: To have a caring and supportive approach towards children.
Timeframe
The introductory training is spread over 12 days, totaling 78 hours.

Expectations of participants
Participants must attend all training days.
Between training days, please allocate time to review your notes and course materials, and to read books by Maria Montessori. You might also be required to create activity plans and/or prepare for practical application scenarios.
Materials provided for the training
Training room equipped with Montessori materials on shelving, tables, chairs, projector, and a whiteboard or flip chart.
Instructor: Marie-Hélène Barbier, a teacher and Montessori educator specializing in the 3 – 6 and 6 – 12 age groups, and a trainer in Montessori pedagogy.

Theoretical presentations: Biography of Maria Montessori and history of the method. The 4 planes of child development. The 3-6 year old child.

Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Case study: Mistakes to avoid when applying the method in one’s classroom.
Day 3
Morning:
Presentation of Practical Life materials: Pouring II, Technical gestures II, frames II, sequential activities, creativity, cooking.
Summary of the Practical Life materials.
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Exercise: The adult’s positioning.
Presentation: The adult’s speech in the classroom.
Day 4
Afternoon:
Presentation of sensorial materials: The blocks, the stereognostic materials, the Geometry materials I, first and second color boxes,
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Presentation and explanation: Oral language: vocabulary enrichment, classified vocabulary.

Day 5
Morning:
Presentation of sensorial materials: The pairing activities. Geometry materials II.
Presentation of language: “I Spy”
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Summary of the sensorial materials.
Day 6
Morning:
Presentation of materials. Language: The sandpaper letters and sandpaper digraphs, the large movable alphabet and spontaneous writing.
Math: Counting from 0 to 10 (The red and blue rods, the spindles, odd and even, beans and tickets, the bead stair).
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group. Presentation: Handwriting I: principles and preparatory exercises.
Day 7
Afternoon:
Presentation of materials. Language: From spontaneous writing to reading (reading boxes, writing materials, classified cards, homophone pouches).
Math: Deepening understanding from 0 to 10: the addition snakes I and II. Numeration up to 9,999 (1, 10, 100, 1,000), introduction to hierarchies, the bank game, the symbols chart, the magic of numbers, making change.
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Day 8
Morning:
Presentation of materials. Language: Handwriting II (method and exercises), introduction to grammar: the concept of noun, labeling, studias (grammar study materials).
Math: Addition and subtraction with the golden beads (static then dynamic). Memorization of addition and subtraction I: the strip boards. Numeration: the first Seguin board.
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Summary of learning to read.
Day 9
Morning:
Presentation of materials. Language: Grammar: the verb (symbols, commands).
Math: Addition and subtraction with the stamps then on the bead frame (static then dynamic), memorization II (finger charts and counters). The subtraction snake. The second Seguin board.
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Summary of addition and subtraction.
Day 10
Morning:
Presentation of materials. Language: The noun phrase (presentation of symbols, exercises to deepen understanding of the adjective), the concepts of masculine/feminine and singular/plural.
Math: Multiplication and division with the beads. The hundred board, the hundred chain. Memorization of multiplication and division I (perforated boards).
Afternoon:
Individual guided work: Review of the presented materials. Practice presenting a material.
Role-playing: Presentation of materials by trainees, analysis of the practice with the group.
Day 11
Morning:
Presentation of materials. Language Grammar: Conjunctions and Prepositions (symbols). The 1st chart of functions.
Math: Multiplication and division with the stamps. Memorization II (finger charts and counters). The chains.

Role-playing: Presentation of materials by participants, analysis of the practice with the group.
Day 12
Presentation of materials. Language: Grammar: the adverb (symbol), the 2nd chart of functions. Summary of grammar.
